I admire how far Julia has come since this book and I was pleased to see some of my favorite signature styles of hers still managing to pop up every now and then in this story. As I said, it was as if things were being done all at once in this book, including with the two leads.Īll in all, I mostly enjoyed myself for this one, despite the hangups on the amateurish style and the meh story, which is pretty much a story about how two people who don't want marriage eventually want marriage. Stubborn? Pushover? Overprotective? Indifferent? It was a hodgepodge of characteristics. It almost felt like Julia couldn't settle on what she wanted these two lovers to be towards each other or even alone. Their blandness was totally off-putting, as well as their periodic bizarre spurts of eccentricities.

Neither one of them had very likable personalities either it just seemed that the two only liked each other because Julia said they did. There wasn't enough development between the two to convince me that what they had was believable. An overly beautiful girl that every man wants and an overly hot guy that every woman wants. The hero (Alex) and heroine (Emma) were fairly generic by romance standards, even those written by Julia herself. An overuse of common tropes from romances, including certain dialogue or narrations. Too often I had forgotten who was who or if I should care. Characters (both secondary and main alike) were clogging up the pages and sharing narrative duties. I felt like I was being jolted this way and that by everything going on, which is strange to say for a book that actually had a fairly uncompelling story. As a result of this, much of this book had an over-abundance of things that gave it a sort of chaotic feel. Still, from the start, it felt like this book was a result of Julia simply pining to explode absolutely EVERYTHING she loves about storytelling all at once, straight out the gate and it showed. In fact, I still found it entertaining, especially once it finally found its rhythm. Having become QUITE accustomed to Julia's later works, diving into this book was definitely jarring. Every author simply MUST start somewhere, so it was to be expected that this her first book would be rougher around the edges.

That's a testament to an author's growth, which I feel is quite important. Not only has this book further solidified just how well Julia Quinn has sharpened her storytelling skills over the years, but she also got way better in developing her characters.

In fact, I mean it as more a compliment than anything else. So obvious that this was Julia Quinn's debut.īecause.whoa.
